The ABC Support Hub
Revised service - Coronavirus
Due to Government advice in relation to Coronavirus, we have moved the drop-in Support Hub online. This enables our Hub team to work from home and still offer support conversations to anyone across the UK.
The online service is via booked appointments for up to 45 minutes each and is completely free of charge. More information including how to book an appointment and profiles for our Support Hub team members is below. We look forward to talking with you soon.
About the Support Hub
The Support Hub Online offers support and information to anyone in the UK affected by eating disorders. Appointments are available via Skype every Thursday from 9.30am-4.15pm and we offer either a video call or online chat (instant messaging). The service is completely free of charge and open to all - for anyone concerned about eating disorders, either those with or without a formal diagnosis, their family, friends or carers.
We can help with:
- Confidential emotional and practical support before or after diagnosis
- Self-care and coping strategies for individuals and carers
- Encouragement and support during recovery
- A chance to share experiences with someone who has recovered/cared for someone during recovery
- A positive way to reduce isolation during social distancing measures
- Information on treatment options available, and how to access
- information for parents, carers, family members and friends
Comments from recent Support Hub users:
"Thanks for today. I feel like I have action points to go away with"
"It was really nice to get to talk to someone who isn't my family or friends"
"The chat today was so helpful and I feel like I have lots more ideas about how to support my daughter better"
Meet the Team
Our Support Hub team have personal experience of either recovery from an eating disorder or caring for a loved one during recovery. This means they really do understand how hard it can be to cope with the feelings, emotions and behaviours an eating disorder creates.
All support staff receive comprehensive training for their role, including safeguarding, and hold enhanced DBS check certification.
Belinda - offering support to anyone struggling personally
I struggled with food and eating disorders for over 15 years including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and orthorexia. By 2016, I had recovered fully from disordered eating and I'm excited to qualify as a Nutritional Therapist in Autumn 2020. I hope to specialise in supporting people with eating disorders. Watch my short video to find out more about how I can help you.
Rosie - offering support to anyone struggling personally
I’m currently studying psychology at university. When I was younger I struggled with OSFED, anorexic, bulimic and bingeing tendencies for several years. I am now in a place of recovery and want to support others going through a difficult time and to let you know that you’re not alone. I can particularly offer support on bingeing, purging, body image and restriction. Watch my short intro video below to find out more about me and how I can help you.
Joanna - offering support to parents, carers, family & friends
At 14 years old, my daughter developed Anorexia followed by Binge Eating Disorder. Her recovery was a long, hard journey for our family. She is now 20, at university, is happy and in a good place. As a parent, I know how valuable it is to talk to someone who truly understands. I can offer support on navigating the illness as a parent/carer or family member, or just listen to and understand your concerns. I am also a qualified practice nurse and SEN learning assistant. Watch my short video below to find out the kinds of issues and questions I can help with.
Booking an appointment
Simply click on the button below and follow the instructions provided.
In order to access the online service, you will need a Skype account. If you don't already have one, it's free and simple to set up.
Set up a Skype account here
Once you have booked your appointment, you will receive an email confirmation. The team member will contact you using the Skype name you have provided within 5 minutes of your appointment start time.
PLEASE NOTE: During the booking process, you will be asked for your Skype name and also an email address. If we experience technical difficulties contacting you via Skype, we may need to email you to try and resolve. If you do have trouble connecting with our team, please remember to check your email (including your spam/junk folder).
Guidelines for using the service
We ask that you kindly adhere to a few guidelines when booking appointments and using the service. This is to ensure fair access to all and so we can support as many people as possible at this time:
a) Bookings can be made for a Hub session up to one month in advance. Please remember the service only runs on a Thursday each week, however. Bookings for all sessions remains open until all slots are filled.
b) Please do not book more than one appointment for one day (Hub session). Although the booking tool gives you the ability to do this, it is a feature we cannot ‘switch off’ in the booking system and therefore we are relying on everyone understanding that this would be unfair on others trying to use the service too.
c) The member of staff you have booked your appointment with will video call you up to 5 minutes before the start of your booked slot. If they have trouble connecting with you, we will email you using the email address you provide during booking to try and resolve. If we cannot reach you within 15 minutes of the start of your booked appointment time, they will be unable to speak with you on this occasion and you will need to book a new appointment.
d) Appointment times are up to 45 minutes, however, please feel free to talk for less time if that feels right for you. Our team will be guided by you during your conversation.
e) If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment please follow the instructions provided in your booking confirmation email. Please try to give us as much notice as possible however as this will mean we can make the slot available for someone else.
f) If it is the first time you have used the Hub service, at the end of your appointment we will ask your permission to email you a link to a feedback survey. Please note this survey can be completed anonymously, will not be matched to your email address and is entirely optional.
g) If you have used the Hub service a number of times, we may ask your permission to email you a follow up questionnaire/survey from time to time. This is entirely optional and can also be completed anonymously.
Questions and contact details
If you have any questions about the Hub service or experience any difficulties, please email us: firstname.lastname@example.org and we will reply as soon as we are able. Please note the Hub is run on a part-time basis and therefore there may be a short delay in getting back to you. Please bear with us if so.
